Away Ends

what is it with new stadiums and the way away fans are hidden away at many of them ? out of view of TV Cameras like Chelsea,Villa,Everton,Man Utd, Newcastle to name a few, small allocations at most grounds , higher prices at some , most grounds now are just identikit all look the same nothing stands out like the floodlight pylons , the big standing terraces , the names of each grounds well known ends. You cant go over the emirates and start singing we took the pink quadrant we took the pink quadrant we took the pink quadrant emirates.
i was lucky to have had many years following Spurs away knocked off nearly 70 grounds and enjoyed some memorable days . Standing in the rain on the open terraces of the Leazes park end at Newcastle on a cold Wednesday evening, the park end at Everton and its low terrace with a big wall at the back under the seats to get a better view from, the clock end Highbury, south Bank upton park, witton or AV stands at Villa park, The atmospheric Anfield Rd end and k block scoreboard paddock at old trafford, the Archers rd end at the Dell opposite one of the wierdest looking home ends which were called the chocolate boxes. Then there was the Darwen end at Blackburn where we went nutso when Paul stewart scored a last minute winner in a league cup tie in 88 after we our dreadful start to the season and the 2-0 win up there when they first came up in 92, racing down to the front of the terrace and up onto the crash barriers to celebrate. some of the smaller grounds were just as memorable , Tuesday night on the Town end at Hartlepool in the league cup and Gazza on the bench in front of us larking about after he’d scored 4 in the first leg, remember some of the locals trying to get over the fence at the back where a few of us were hidden away smoking a spliff to keep us going for the long coach trip back . The tiny away end at Torquay at least it had a roof, the set up at coventry beggered belief , the home teams supporters sandwiched between our boys in the seats on the side and terrace behind the goal. you wont find the Osmaston lower,Holmesdale, bridgford,Fulwood, at most of these new grounds its the North , south, east , west these days at some plastic shite on an industrial estate with corporate naming rights, thank fu*k we’ve still got the paxton , Park Lane, but fukin shame about the shelf and cage gord bless all those who stood in there . Both like many other ends of the time had Character and great stories to come out of them

Would have to be an Irish club in Scotland but I know it’s not Hibs or Celtic so that leaves Dundee Utd?

That Blackburn away game 92, met at the coach at 6am, about 30 still in there from the Friday night out their loafs, got on the bus, roses tin came round, space cake with speed icing, didn’t know if we were coming or going, got to ewood, my pal the chin couldn’t keep his mincies open, booked himself into the hotel behind the away end, we left him in there he got the train home the next day

I always liked the baseball ground behind the goal or in the side, forest was always a good day out, standing in the rain on a Sunday, lineker did his chip from the penalty spot, the night when it snowed up there, stayed in the cricketers after got home 6am next day

Millwall when you got that big away end and a bit down the side then an empty terrace bar a few old bill

Pompey 91, full away end, on the pitch and into the side, cracker of a day

Always a good turn out at maine road, you used to get that cornet of the kippax and the seats then the other end behind the goal

Great days

Away ends that I can recall going in with Spurs in the 70s and 80s are : scum, Chelsea, west ham, palace, qpr, brentford (friendly match), orient, Fulham, Luton, charlton, Brighton, Bristol rovers and city, derby, Coventry, forest, WBA, Sheffield utd, leicester, man city, Ipswich, Oxford utd, Swindon, bournmouth (friendly). Great memories. Worst slap taken was at Chelsea only about 200 of us got into the shed and got well done, I was 15 or 16 at the time lol

away ends – The Holt – 50 of us got steamed by 10,000 of them
North bank 3,000 of us steamed and took them for at least 5 years on the trot
Mansfield (can’t remember the name) got whacked by old bill for attempting to get in
Brentford (but I knew most of their firm as i had been in the pub having a giraffe with them before the game)
and all other away games I did not let myself get mislaid into going into the “wrong end”………. :wall:

You have a quite unreal collection of photos Pooli. How did your camera survive all the rucks? I can only assume in those days ( 😉 ) cameras weren’t all that small or light.

Heb old memory bank is fading but i think the first 3 are Dell, Anfield and Villa Park.
Thinking about the others although a few look like foreign grounds and i was probably in Oz.

I never became one of the boys till the very early 90s, used to go everywhere with friends and family as a youngster before that and watch the game. I got a programme and ticket stub from every game I went to from my first in 1978 up till 1991 when I stopped buying em, cos it werent cool having a programme hanging out your back pocket and bouncing up n down 🙂 OziAndy always had a copy of the FT hanging out his sky though

All the grounds are right, well done  the only one you all missed was the last but one: Krakow

I was hoping youd tell me!!!!I scanned it out of one of me old albums, got me stumped. Botlon before Tescos?

Gudge nonmember

the two old codgers look like Col and Mackayfan in the Holmesdale end , im sticking with Palarse the long stand down the side looks familiar with a proper away end opposite before the sainsburys appeared. Looks like the Crystal palace transmitter in the background. must admit Bolton and Burnley crossed my mind and all

2 definatley Chelsea. 1 also has a cinder track thingy between Waldorf an Stadler in the stand and the goal. Would not be surprised if that was Chavs as well. Though thier seems to be big fuck of hill in right background, which would make my thought on that being CFC as well, bollocks!

[attachment=0:m0u39cyw]imagesCA0PU82D.jpg[/attachment:m0u39cyw]A Cider for any of you Stattos who can name the Ground and The team who used to play here.
Reckon the only people who might have seen it may have been legging it from Hampden and suddenly found themselves lost in this old ground.
I got lost in the 70’s when the trains were fucked and stumbled upon it when walking back to Glasgow Central. It looks better in these pictures than it did then.

Blinding Walshy. Tottenham Oval NSW?

that stand looks like a big enough to accomodate Chelsea’s massive following in the early 80s

Bootham Crescent. Hilarious, main stand full of them, opposite stand (covered) completely empty, us (admittedly, it was a Sarfend away game), at one end, no cover and it pissing down with rain. As well as out-singing what appeared to be a mortician’s convention, songs were sung about letting us into the empty covered stand. Halfway through the second half, some bloke shuffled over and opened it, but we told him he was too late, and suggested he remove himself from our vicinity.
Back on track, I know that me and Gudge were there but anyone else at the Coventry game, new year 1990? No cover, ice cold rain, 0-0 draw. Nice after a ‘few’ drinks the night before!

gooner mate had a renault 5 gt turbo brand spankin, persuaded him i was running late with a nasty hangover, to use it , done the return in just over 1hr did’nt give a f**k about speeding, picked up a lovely Doris i’d met at a work christmas moriarty and took her out in the tasty motor, she was well impressed but me goon mate was none to impressed to find the state of his car seat. only way to treat the wrong uns.
he got his own back , a story i’ve told on ere before when they ambushed me at Highgate and took me to a Coventry v goon game the next season, kin nightmare, last laugh was on me though after the semi in 91 when i destroyed the roof of his work transit van after they’d stripped me outside me local for giving them grief about the 3-1 victory. got on the roof of the van starkers singing 3-1 we done the scum 3-1 . roof was a mess

Went a few times to Coventry, not sure if was thier in 90 as think it was 80’s was thier. However the one thing is consistent, is of course the bundles of obligatory swill! To a point, we actually ended up at some lovely country boozer, just outside Coventry, after game, far to fucked to drive back to smoke. So the three of us booked digs at pub only to find out that later that evening the place was full of gentleman of an alternative persuasion as well as a load of trannies! :thud: 😆

Gudge nonmember

went up there first in 83 then every season after till about 94. all seats then back to terrace then all seats again.
4th rd lge cup 91/92 after we’d been to grimsby we had em away, took the same double decker coach from the whitehall tav.
stopped at Daventry and the guvnor of a nice little local could’nt believe his luck on a quiet Tuesday afternoon 60 odd yids walked in, it was help yourself time the fella could’nt cope and after an argument between the ugly brothers from queens crescent someone noticed a stones bitter sign on the plate glass window. couple of windows went through and we were sent to coventry in fine form . think Juke Box got a couple that night in a 2-1 win

Worked in Nuneaton for a few months and got to see a few Coventry games (undercover, in more ways than one!). Was fortunate to see them play Liverpool and Man Utd. in the space of a couple of weeks. Good games too, although I had to sit next to my brother’s BIL, a red scouse for the ‘pool game. Caaaaaalm down, caaaaaaalm down! Didn’t see too much in the way of those of another persuasion, but spent quite a few nights with a married young lady. OK, we were on nightshift together, but……

Was at Coventry New Years’ Day in the rain, Bri.

And then again 4th rd of the Cup when stopping off at Daventry as described. Some drink in Daventry. LOL

never went to the NYD 1990 game at Highfield road,

my first time up there was 87, first game of the season, after the cup final, they loved it, sure some gooner in the FA mustve pulled that out the fixture hat, lost 2-1 aswell

The league cup game Gudge was 2-1, Durie definately but I think Paul Allen aswell

Had a good few trips up there, beat em 3-2, sheringham, fox, howells? when they did that rubbing the thighs thing off shooting stars

another league cup game in 95, 2-0 up at half time, cruising, Armstrong cant remember who got the other, then blew it losing 3-2, drove home in total silence bar the opening of a few artois to releive the pain

Went to that League Cup game. nightmare. We were stuffing them too. Also wrong end when they did us 4-0 the same year or just before/after.

Carrow Road always good fun – too much chicken wire though.
Coldest would be Roker. Great day doing them in the cup though. Jurgen getting plenty.
Wettest – Oxford away. came back to beat them 4-2 86/87.
Strangest – Pompey away when they stuffed up the ticket sales. League Cup 3 game affair. We lost. They had about the biggest away support I saw at the Lane for the one game.
Hillbilly award – Hereford.

Modern grounds . Couldn’t tell the difference between them
